Oregon Literary Review and Blackbird Wineshop co-host a reading series in Portland on the first Wednesday of each month. Blackbird Wineshop is located at 3519 NE 44th. This Wednesday, August 7, the readers will be Cecelia Hagen, Matt Love and Smokey Epley. The musician Kate Mann will also be appearing, and there will be wine tasting as well.
Cecelia Hagen is a previous Oregon Literary Fellowship recipient, and has also received fellowships from Soapstone and Caldera. She lives in Eugene where she was the fiction editor of The Northwest Review for many years. Her work can be found online at Passager, and is included in From Here We Speak: An Anthology of Oregon Poetry.
Here's a writing prompt from Cecelia: Take a walk. Walk alone, and preferably go somewhere familiar. Observe what's around you, but also what's going on inside. By the time your walk is over, you'll have a phrase or two, or an image, and you'll be happy to go sit down and write.
Matt Love is the founder and publisher of Nestucca Spit Press. His books include Red Hot and Rollin’: A Retrospection of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 1976-77 Championship Season. Matt Love and Smokey Epley will be reading from Men In Exile: An Anthology of Creative Writing by Inmates of the Oregon State Penitentiary.
Matt lives near Newport, and is also the editor of the forthcoming Citadel of the Spirit: Oregon's Sesquicentennial Anthology, which will be released in February, 2009.
There seems to be a mysterious connection between pie and poetry readings in Klamath Falls. An announcement of a reading in Klamath Falls from a few months back assures the public that pie will be available, as does this announcement of a reading there last February. Poetry and pie. It makes sense.
