Seed: Words + Music is the first show in a series where musicians and writers trade inspiration. Each writer chose a song from the night's musicians to inspire a story, and each musician chose a story from the evening's writers to inspire a song. All the new material will be performed for the first time ever on this very special night at the Alberta Rose Theatre.
The concept for the night was born when "Seed" creator Courtenay Hameister was involved in the making of "Carry On," a CD that was a tribute to Teisha Helgerson of the band Amelia, who passed away in 2011. The CD was created when Portland musicians took Teisha's unfinished lyrics and used them as inspiration for new songs. The record inspired Hameister to apply for a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to fund a show where the night's participants could take anything from each other's work - a word, a concept, a turn of phrase - and make something new with it.
"To me, the impetus to write something new is a gift, so it was important to me that the series be generative - that every musician and writer would walk away from the experience with a new piece of work," Hameister says. "It's amazing to me to see what can happen when you offer an artist even the tiniest seed of inspiration."
Seed was made possible in part by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
